Poker, rummy or be it may any other card games that is available online, a common fact remains that they are all a part of celebration these days. Be that as it may but the recent Diwali surge in gameplays has piqued our curiosity as to how many people have decided to cosy-up and just play it out online than celebrating the festival of lights with people.
Determined to find out the exact status our team did a small sweeping among the people and the start-ups who provide the game online. Raveena Abrol, a resident of Chennai was up all of Wednesday night playing poker with her family in Delhi.
“I couldn’t join my family this time for Diwali. But playing poker is tradition so we are all online on the same platform,” Abrol said. With avid players going online, poker companies are witnessing a surge in players coming in from across the country.
The Spartan Poker has an average of around 500 concurrent players online on a usual day. On Wednesday, the company saw this number double up to 800-1,000 players. Average bets have tripled from Rs 100 per table to Rs 300 per table during Diwali.
While a rookie can opt to join a free table or simply watch a game, experienced players spend as much as 7-10 hours playing poker. “Players will stay on for 2-4 hours on average. For tournament players, it could be anywhere from 2-7 hours as deeply structured tournaments tend to go on for a longer time,” said Amin Rozani, MD and co-founder, The Spartan Poker.
At Khelo365, over 10,000 unique players try their hand at poker on a regular day. This week, the startup has seen this number touching 13,000 everyday. With average stakes going up by 28% during this week, the company has seen its revenues swell up by 30% already.
As family members across cities look to connect with each other through online poker, Khelo365 offers exclusive tables. “We see an exclusive set of friends wanting to play together. We give them passwords to ensure that only those who they want can join the table,” said Naresh Rajaraman, co-founder, Khelo365.
In modern times many Indians like to celebrate the victory of light over darkness by over-eating, over-indulging, getting drunk, gambling, polluting the environment and swapping their spouses. So much for the social communication scenario that Einstein envisioned.
Mad Over Poker expect the numbers to go up on the weekends. “Around 700-800 unique players play every day on our platform. We are experiencing incremental growth and this number is expected to go up. We have Sunday Blast Series, a collection of 6 high value tournaments in one day with a total prize pool of 10 lakh + 1 lakh in leader board prizes on 22nd Oct hence we are expecting a higher than usual turnaround,” Amit Kanodia, cofounder & CEO, Mad Over Poker.
In a bid to keep players streaming in, most companies have festive offers running. The Spartan Poker is offering larger prize pool for some of their tournaments. “Across multiple tournaments like Elite, Diwali special edition and Spartan Super Series Platinum edition, we are offering prizes from Rs 10 lakhs to Rs 1 crore and Rs 3.3 crore in prize pools,” said Rozani. Khelo365 also has several offers up for grabs to lure players.
