“Sometimes I am inspired by some of the colours that I come across on the runway. But most of the time I develop some concept on my own”
It took Alka Hari just five years to become a household name among those women who prefer classy breathable everyday wear. For Alka, however, these past few years as an entrepreneur and designer, taught her some of the most valuable lessons. “What we learn in college is just the basics, it was after I got into work that I learnt in detail about different fabrics and different body types.”
While Alka says although her ace fashion designer father Hari Anand is just a call away when it comes to any doubt that she may have, he does not get involved in her work. ”He is always busy with his works, so he does not get time for anything else.”
Alka draws inspiration for her designs from a number of different things, “Sometimes I am inspired by some of the colours that I come across on the runway. However, most of the time I develop some concept on my own.”
One of the biggest challenges according to Alka is the slow shift in fashion in Kerala, “There are limitations when it comes to experimenting with designs. I always keep a report on the kind of designs that are most sought after in my store, so that I get an idea about what our customer is looking for on a regular basis, whether it is the design or the colour.”
For Alka, the biggest driving force is the compliment she receives from her customers.
